$2 Million worth of electricity were stolen in Malaysia for Bitcoin mining

Police in the Malaysian state of Jahor have detained several suspects for theft of electricity for Bitcoin mining.

Malaysian police have seized 1746 Bitcoin mining rigs across 21 premises in raids this week.

Earlier this week, authorities in Johor, Malaysia, arrested seven men for stealing millions of dollars worth of electricity for bitcoin mining.

An operation involving local electricity company Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Johor police led to the arrest of the suspects, aged between 24 and 64, according to a Malay Mail report on Wednesday.

The investigation revealed that the gang had stolen 8.6 million Malaysian ringgit ($2.13 million) in lost profits since mining began in 2020. Police seized 1 746 Bitcoin mining rigs worth a reported 2.6 million ringgit ($64 000) from 21 premises.

“The syndicate, which has been operating since early last year, carried out its activities on the top floor of the shop to avoid detection by the authorities,” Johor police chief Datuk Ayob Khan Midin Pitchai said. Police are still investigating the operation and trying to track down the mastermind of the group and other members who are still at large, he said.
