Venezuela accepts Bitcoin as a fee for passport application
Venezuela’s government reportedly accepts Bitcoin as a payment method for some passport applications.
The government structure in Venezuela accepted Bitcoin as a payment method for passport applications. But just for a few hours.
The Venezuelan government has allowed BTC payments for country’s passport, but just fir a few hours. This payment option has been seen on the website of SAIME, the Administrative Service for Identification, Migration, and Foreigners.
A Twitter user published a screenshot of the passport agency’s web page showing that he had started taking bitcoins.
According to the report, it took about 8 minutes to confirm payment with BTC. Bitcoin payments were processed through BTCPay Server payment processor. The government had previously suspended credit card payments and this may be due to the fact that the BTC option was enabled for a short time.
Users reported that bitcoin payments appear to have been deleted hours after they were introduced. However, Venezuelan journalist Marbellis Linares denied that Bitcoin payment option was indeed available, noting that the information about the crypto payment was “false”.
However, this contradicts other reports and the users who posted the screenshots. Some users also suggested that this option was not available to Venezuelan users, only to foreign users who applied for passports.
