Is Mental Fitness in any way related to Physical Exercising?
First of all, Are you a fit person? How did you just outline the word ‘Fitness’ in your mind? Was the first thought only about your physique?
Most of us relate the word ‘Fitness' with our external physique. Do you have a 16 ka dola and 46 ki chhati? How shredded do you look when you pose? How fast can you run? How clearly you can see your abs? And We have a lot of such interpretations of our own.
We should remember, that:
“ A Healthy mind resides in a healthy body”
In today’s competitive world, It ain’t enough to just be physically fit. You’ve to sharpen your brain and calm your mind too. A person who is mentally fit does not just make wiser decisions but is also satisfied with his life regardless of the financial background and possesses higher self-esteem too.
A Mentally fit person doesn’t go for motivation, but for realization.
Synchronizing Mental and Physical Fitness.
Yes. These two run hand in hand, and there’s a chemistry that we need to understand.
Research has proved, that there is one thing that has effects on both. And that one thing is ‘Exercise’. We do exercise for building muscles and looking organized. But if you’ve paid vigilance, after every sweat-inducing workout, you have a mood boost in addition to an energy boost. You are able to focus and maintain your attention for longer than you did before. But how does it happen?
Exercise is the most transformative thing that you can do for your brain today.
- Exercise has an immediate effect on our brains. A single workout that we do immediately increases levels of neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, etc. which boosts our mood and energy right after that workout.
- Exercise actually changes the brain’s anatomy, physiology, and function. In simple words, It can boost our memory.
- If properly understood and researched, Exercise can be used as a powerful tool to feel better.
- If you worry about long-term illness, then there are a lot of diseases you need to take into account such as Alzheimer’s, diabetes, aging against time, etc. Exercise is also effective in dealing with depression, anxiety, stress, and any more of the new era of diseases.
In the book ‘Brain Rules', John Medina concluded the very first rule as ‘Exercise’. He says,
“Our brains were built for walking- 12 miles a day!”
We can’t walk 12 miles a day but fortunately, it has a substitute: Exercising!
Let’s see some remarkable benefits of exercise for our body.
The first and most important benefit of exercise is that it retains our morning energy level throughout the day. We do not feel tired after executing the daily routine tasks, instead, we’re ready to take up challenges as well.
- Exercise helps you increase your response speed to reflex actions. Your body movements become faster. Like, In the cinema complex you can catch that popcorn box falling from the counter before it touches the ground. This would be because your riposte speed to reflex action is now increased. And trust me, it is very important to save that popcorn box!
- When you have a governed body and you know that you are physically fit, then you can trust yourself. You know your capabilities. Thus, saving you from the mental catastrophe of questions like, “Whether I’m capable of taking up this task, or I’ll end up making fun of myself!”
But it is one thing to talk about exercise and another to do it.
In this technological era, we are unconsciously becoming lethargic. We don’t want a long walk at all. We want everything at doorsteps. And if you are a smart device user, then Alexa will do it all for you. No need to get up from the bed. Right?
If we don’t value ourselves, ‘self-care’ might be an alien language for us. But, its high time that we understand the value of ‘Our body being charged up before our phones!’
How to exercise regularly, is the biggest question!
If you have such a question in mind and are endeavoring to initiate the process, Congratulations, You’re normal!
The beginning is the most difficult part. But once you begin, you will start enjoying the process. You will feel delighted while and after exercising.
We don’t have to be a fitness freak. No need to devote hours of our precious time to the gym. Instead, we have to focus on building healthier habits. Waking up early in the morning, warming up, meditating, eating vegetables, etc. And for building these habits we have to enjoy this process. Because, more than the body, it’s a game of mind!
So, what should I expect first, feeling of happiness or healthier habits? Well, it’s a paradoxical question, ones like the arrival of the chicken and egg.
Getting in the right viewpoint can make it simpler.
Start small. It’s absolutely okay to start small. In fact, it’s smart. It is better to set achievable goals and build up from there. Also, no two people will have the same journey or aftermath in the world of wellness.
Marveling, how much will I have to work out, to get a healthier body? It’s presumably not as much as you think!
30 minutes of intermediate exercise 5 times a week will do the job for us.
Start with a 5 to 10 minutes session and unhurriedly increase it.
‘Amazing things can happen in just a few minutes’.
Even a little bit of activity is better than nothing.
The key is to do some physical recreation, however little, on most days. As exercising becomes an obsession, you can slowly add superfluous minutes.
“It’s not about how much. It’s about how long”
