A Day on the Andaman Sea

“Time for lunch!” My instructor called waking me from my undulant slumber on the sun deck of our dive boat.

Fresh pad Thai and massaman curry were on the menu.

We ate it beneath the towering limestone cliffs of Ko Phi Phi Lee, the opposite side of the island where “The Beach” was filmed.

Back 30 ft beneath the sea my instructor raised his thumb to his forehead, the sign for sharks. I excitedly waved to my dive buddy and pointed at the blacktip reef sharks just 15 ft away.

Minutes later we came across a group of other divers, some with cameras out. Below them were several hawksbill sea turtles meandering by.

My childlike ecstasy of experiencing weightlessness overcame me as I did flip after flip, frontwards and backward.

Schools of fish surrounded me, much less impressed at the sight of me, as I was of them.

We cruised back to Ao Nang passing by little clusters of grey jagged islands topped with occasional patches of greenery.

The breeze swept through the dive boat open deck, knocking over people’s cups and sending my dive course final exam to its watery demise.

Brightly decorated long tail boats zoomed by, the props buzzing and spattering water.

The water was calm as the fading light glinted off its surface.

A ruminant culmination to our day on the Andaman Sea.
