Sri Lanka is home to many cool ideas. One such idea evolved into a SaaS product called eZuite™ and won the title of ‘Most Innovative & Best Solution in Cloud Computing’ at the Annual Awards Night held by the National Best Quality Software Awards (NBQSA) on October 12, 2019.

Lashan Silva of Enhanzer tells us about this cool tech product, the recent recognition they received as well as the challenges they underwent to get to where they are today.

What is eZuite?

It is a modern cloud ERP product that simplifies and empowers SME’s to automate business operations such as procurement, finance, inventory, marketing, sales and payroll. eZuite has 100+ SME and corporate clients including JatHoldings, Hirdaramani Group, George Gunaratne Optemetrics, Amrith, Lanka Shakthi and Sea Green Ceramics and is the only product in that category that is trilingual.

What are the challenges of a startup in Sri Lanka?

“Everyone is working on cloud technology now and there’s a lot of great products out there. What’s great about these types of awards is that it gives startups the exposure we need,” says Lashan.

A big challenge startups often face, especially in B2B models is that potential clients (or leads) need credible references or existing clients. “When we first started off five years ago, it took a lot of convincing on my behalf for leads to give our product a chance. But we were relentless and kept on working on the product while carrying out demos and reaching out to clients,” says Lashan.

The other awards for the night were the ‘Silver Award for Industrial Applications in the Supply Chain automation’ category and the Merit Award for eZuite Admin.

One of the biggest challenges that Enhanzer faces as a tech startup in Sri Lanka is recruitment. People are reluctant to get involved in startups because they are not willing to take risks. Many prefer the rigid stability that a corporate would offer. “Startups are about making it work. We have to accept challenges and see them through till the end. To me personally, it’s an exciting place to be because there is so much potential for great things to happen and for us as individuals as well as a company to evolve and learn,” says Lashan.

“You need to believe in what you do and keep working on it. There is a lot of ups and downs (sometimes mostly downs) but what’s great about a startup is that we can work around it faster,” adds Lashan.

Hatch as a startup ecosystem

“Being at Hatch is very convenient because of its central location and close proximity to our clients. We wanted to expand our horizons and networks and Hatch is the place to do so. Our team has grown from eight to fifteen in the past four months since we moved here. We also love the open work atmosphere. Being a startup, we particularly value the Hatch nurture mentorship programme’ because we’re learning a lot from it,” adds Lashan.
