10 Questions with…

  1. Name: Josh Dominy
  2. Current job title: Creative Lead, Cricket
  3. How long have you been at HEI? 3 and a half years
  4. What services will Hawk-Eye be delivering throughout the Women’s Cricket World Cup?

The team will be delivering our full range of officiating services, which includes Auto No Ball, UltraEdge and Ball Tracking. Linked closely to the officiating services, we are providing the ICC Match Officials with a range of technology, including DRS and Innings Timers, as well as the communication system between on and off-field umpires. In addition to all of this, we will be delivering regular analytical segments to the broadcast, whereby we use our real-time data collection through our ball-tracking technology to find trends within the game, and then represent these through video sequences or graphical representations to inform and enthuse the viewer.

5. What are your main responsibilities when operating at major Cricket events like the Women’s World Cup?

As a major event within the ICC calendar, the Women’s World Cup is a busy project for the team. The overriding responsibility during a major tournament is to meet our client requirements, whether that be the sporting governing body or the broadcast production company. A major part of this is the officiating, whereby decisions can ultimately decide the result of a match. A lot of work goes into this process from our team on the ground, requiring kit installation and maintenance throughout the event, as well as high-level operations during each match. Another main responsibility lies within our analytical storytelling, using the data we collect to inform viewers watching at home and make the events as engaging as possible. With 15 operators based out in New Zealand during the event, split across 3 different locations around the country, there is a lot of collaboration within this work.

6. What other key projects will the cricket team deliver in 2022?

Throughout 2022, there are a number of key projects in the pipeline. Immediately following the Women’s World Cup is the Indian Premier League, which will be hosted back in India for the first time in two years due to COVID. Beyond this, a busy UK summer which includes a number of England home series, as well as the second season of The Hundred, will lead us into a Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia which begins in October. Outside of operations, there are a number of R&D projects looking to maximise the potential of our data as well as our recent rapid growth rate, making it an exciting time to be involved within the team.

7. What do you love the most about World Cups?

With cricket having developed into such a global game in recent years, players regularly find themselves playing in franchise teams around the world where their teammates are often made up of individuals from different countries. This creates lots of interesting matchups where previously club teammates now become international opposition, and it is always compelling to see those battles unfold within a World Cup.

8. What’s your favourite moment in the history of cricket?

It’s not quite a moment, but more an entire summer. Back in July of 2019, England went on to win an ODI World Cup for the first time. The final, held at Lord’s, resulted in a fascinating game which saw England come out winners after a super over against New Zealand. Only a few months later during the Ashes, Ben Stokes produced what has been tipped as the best test innings ever by an Englishman, hitting an unbeaten 135 at Headingley to beat Australia and take the Ashes to a deciding final Test. Those few months brought cricket to the forefront of British sport, and I had mates talking about it who had never expressed an interest in the sport before! Having a peripheral involvement in that summer through the access gained with the job will make it live long in the memory.

9. What do you enjoy most about working at HEI?

Working with like-minded people who are enthusiastic about sport, tech and driving what we do forwards makes working at HEI very enjoyable. Being able to contribute to projects that are viewed by sometimes hundreds of millions of people is very rewarding.

10. What advice would you give to anyone applying?

Working within the cricket team provides you with the opportunity to travel all over the world and work with some of the biggest names in the sport.
