A user testing platform that uses eye tracking to deliver unparalleled insights into user behavior.

Everyone knows understanding user behavior is essential to improving products. As recent success stories like Superhuman and Notion have shown, good design is everywhere these days. This means it’s more important than ever to get great, actionable insights into how people use your product and what you can do to improve their experience.

But right now, existing research tools leave a lot to be desired. One option is event-based analytics and always-on screen recorders, but these services really only show you which pages the user visits and what actions they perform. Another popular approach is conducting narrated user studies with paid participants. These sessions may give you a huge amount of information, but can become tedious to watch, often aren’t representative of real users, and can quickly run up a large bill.

Hawkeye takes a different approach to user research. Using the TrueDepth camera on newer iOS devices, Hawkeye lets you track where people look in your products without the need for any extra hardware. Compared to traditional screen recordings, this gives you a far better understanding of the user’s thought process. You can see where they get confused, what grabs their attention, and begin to understand why they perform the actions they do.

Today, we’re excited to launch the Hawkeye testing platform. Right off the bat, you can conduct eye tracking tests on any mobile website or InVision prototype, with more test types coming soon. The platform lets you easily invite participants to complete tests on their own devices in their own time. With Hawkeye’s eye tracking, you can play back screen recordings showing where participants look and view heatmaps of the most-viewed areas in your product. Best of all, Hawkeye was designed from the ground up with great UX in mind. You can rest assured that we’ve put the same level of thought and care into designing Hawkeye as you’ve put into the very products you’re testing.

This is just the start of what we have planned for Hawkeye. Zooming out a bit, we believe providing automated, yet deeper insights into user experience can make it far easier for anyone to improve their products.

  • Automated insights. Techniques like eye tracking made possible by new smartphone hardware can ease the hassle of traditional research while also providing more valuable insights.
  • Learn from real users. Tests can more easily be conducted with real users, instead of with paid testers who may never have used the product.
  • Available to everyone. Individuals and small teams without dedicated researchers can get automated reports on user behavior.

We can’t wait to build Hawkeye with your help and feedback. You can sign up for free here and follow us on Twitter for updates.

Huge thank you to everyone who’s helped us get this far :)
