It’s so easy to get caught up in all the trends of each passing season that we often forget to go back to the basics. Here’s a list of ten essential items for you to have in your fall wardrobe.

1. Jeans

Every girl — actually, every person — needs a good pair of jeans that flatters their body, fits comfortably and makes them feel confident. They are especially important in autumn, when jeans become the basic uniform for every event — from classes to a fun night out, jeans are the perfect option. Try American Eagle for affordable, good quality jeans to fit a large variety of body types and styles.

2. Flannels

Flannels quickly became popular over the last few years and their popularity is only growing with each passing season. Needless to say, they have become an essential for every woman’s wardrobe. Target has quite a few different colors available, but you can also find them at places like Forever 21 and Abercrombie & Fitch.

3. Oversized Scarves

Oversized scarves keep you warm and toasty during those chilly fall nights and can double as a blanket in those classrooms that haven’t had their AC turned off yet. They also add a chic touch to any basic outfit! Try one with a cable knit texture like this, or perhaps a flannel scarf if you want to experiment without wearing a plaid shirt.

4. Leather Jacket

Leather and faux leather has been a fall staple for many years. Add this essential to your wardrobe for an easy way to look a little more edgy while still being cute and comfortable. Try a simple black one or experiment with some other colors like tan or maroon.

5. Comfy Cardigans

Oversized, comfy knit cardigans are another simple way you can spice up your fall wardrobe which retaining the comfort of your favorite pajamas. They come in a rainbow of different colors and styles so suite every individuals personal preference. H&M has a variety of styles from the classic preppy short cardigan to the long blanket- style ones.

6. Beanies (and other hats)

Throwing on a hat helps hide dirty hair (especially once the semester gets going and you can’t find the time to wash it every day) while adding a unique touch to even the most basic of outfits. If you like beanies, PacSun is a popular shop, while those who prefer a more classic silhouette should check out ASOS instead.

7. Tights

You don’t have to store away all those cute skirts and dresses from summertime just yet! Fall is the perfect time to pair those itty bitty skirts with thick tights for a warm and fashion-forward look. Try these for a basic option, or opt for a patterned pair like this for more edge.

8. Boots

Boots of all kinds are a staple piece for many people during the cooler months. You may opt for the classic riding boot, or perhaps a shorter, edgier combat boot. Whatever you decide, these shoes can be paired with anything and will keep you warm and comfortable well into the winter. As a plus, heeled boots can easily transition you from day to night!

9. Knee-High Socks

Knee-high or over-the-knee socks are an easy way to add style and edge to your outfits. Not sure how to wear them? Try with a skirt and some boots, or over skinny jeans with knee-high boots for warmth and comfort.

10. Moccasins

Those warmer days make it tempting to pull out the flip flops again, but opt for something more fall-appropriate with a pair of moccasins. They look adorable with skirts, but comfy and laid back with jeans and a cozy sweater. Try these for a good quality option.
