It’s that time of the year again — the leaves are falling, your favorite jacket is making its long-awaited return, and everything from your head to your toes is dry. It’s an unfortunate part of the season, but with the drop in temperature (and humidity) skin takes a beating.

One of the most affected areas? Your lips.

As one of the thinnest areas of skin on the body, it seems that no matter what you do, there’s no way to prevent dry, cracked, cold-weather lips. While that might be true in most cases, there are plenty of ways to treat them while keeping your style game strong.

From lip-care to all-night wear, here are 5 lip products (with well-deserved cult-followings) sure to get you through fall with style, comfort and ease!

To Refresh and Renew

Just as with your face and body, the best way to smooth, supple lips is with a good scrub. During the colder months, exfoliating your lips is not only effective, it’s essential.

Lips get chapped easily as the humidity begins to dip, leaving your lips flaky, dehydrated, and let’s face it, painful. To combat this, use a lip scrub like Tarte’s Maracuja Lip Exfoliant.

To use, apply a small amount to your lips and scrub in a circular motion. The raw sugar crystals work to remove any dead skin, while maracuja oil, mint and Vitamin C soothe and hydrate your lips.

Where to buy: $16; Tarte, Sephora, Ulta

To Plump and Hydrate

Now that your lips are prepped and refreshed, it’s time to lock in some hydration. There are hundreds of lip balms to choose from out there, but there’s only one that’s had a cult following since 1892!

With a cool blend of peppermint oil and moisturizing “trade secret” essential oils, it’s no wonder Rosebud Perfume Co.’s Minted Rose Lip Balm has been expertly soothing lips for over a hundred years.

To use, simply dip your finger in the product and pat on for soft, moisturized lips. This lip balm comes with almost FIVE times more product than a regular chapstick and, contrary to appearance, it’s colorless so it can be used everywhere from your elbows to your knees.

The best part? While compact, this tin is a pretty decent size, meaning no more misplaced lip balms!

Where to buy: $7; Sephora, Ulta, Amazon

To Add a Sheer (and Moisturizing) Tint

You’ve brought your lips back from oblivion and properly hydrated them. You want to keep them that way, but you’re vying for a little color too. Enter Glossier’s Balm Dot Com Universal Skin Salve!

Started by IntoTheGloss’ Emily Weiss in 2014, Glossier is a fairly new brand taking over the beauty world, one cult product at a time. From their “Super Pack” Skin Serums to their beloved Milky Jelly Cleanser, they’re all about good skincare. With a slogan like, “Skin First. Makeup Second. Smile Always,” would you expect anything less?

Being a skincare based brand, they recognize the importance of good lip care, and have found the perfect balance between a super hydrating lip balm and a lip tint in their flavored Balm Dot Com’s. Formulated with castor seed oil, cupuacu fruit extract and rosemary leaf extract, this super dense lip balm keeps the hydration locked in for hours.

To use, simply squeeze a small amount onto your finger and liberally apply to your lips for a soft Cherry-red, hydrated finish.

Where to buy: $12; Glossier

To Add Some Glam to Your Everyday

As much as we all like (and need) a good lip balm, we love a great lipstick. Fall is a great time of the year for colors, especially when it comes to lipsticks. Reds, browns, berry’s and plums, we just can’t get enough!

When it comes to lipstick, it’s hard to top Charlotte Tilbury, and her Matte Revolution Lipstick in “Bond Girl.” A lovely muted rose-plum, this lipstick is a necessity in everyone’s fall makeup collection. This is the priciest item on the list, but it’s with good reason.

Though marketed as a matte lipstick, this one is anything but. It’s buttery, it’s creamy and it’s hydrating. Formulated with orchard extract and Charlotte’s secret ingredient, “Lipstick Tree” extract, this lipstick will leave your lips opaque and moisturized all day long.

To use, apply straight from the bullet to your lips. The square shape of the head is made specifically for precise application, mimicking the shape of a lip brush and ensuring near-perfect application every time.

Where to buy: $32; Charlotte Tilbury, Nordstrom, Beautylish

To Last All Day (and Night) Long

No, your eyes are not playing a trick on you, this is a liquid lipstick and I am including it on this list. You’re probably asking yourself, “why is a notoriously dry lip product on a cold-weather ‘must-haves’ list?” While liquid lipsticks are typically dry, matte formulas, this is exactly what makes them perfect for the season!

Hear me out.

Picture this— it’s a brisk fall day and the wind at Montclair State is whipping like no other. You find yourself regretting two things: leaving your scarf in your boyfriend’s car and putting on that sticky lip gloss this morning.

With those notorious mountain winds upon us once again, the last thing you want to be wearing is a sticky lip product. Why? Because hair, that’s why. Sticky lip gloss, fierce winds and hair you forgot to pull into a ponytail this morning do not make the best of friends (all hail the pixie cut, am I right?)

So there you are, walking through campus, fighting with the wind as you try in vain to keep your hair from getting anywhere near your mouth. You then begin to contemplate your life choices as they led you to where you are now — sticky, shivering and in dire need of an expresso ASAP.

But with liquid lipsticks, you can bypass this headache completely. That is why they’re so popular: they won’t move. Seriously — you’re going to need a nice amount of coconut oil to get these bad boys off at the end of the night (well, if they’re any good at least).

Liquid Lipstick is definitely having its moment right now. From Kat Von D to Kylie J, it’s practically an epidemic. It seems that every other month another company releases their version of a liquid lipstick. However, none quite top Colourpop when it comes to range in finishes colors and pricepoints.

One of their best sellers from their Ultra-Matte collection is a beautiful, true-blue red called “Creeper.” A universally flattering shade, this lipstick is perfect on any skin tone. And what’s better than a seasonal red lip, perfect for a night on the town or sipping eggnog later on in the season!

To use, first line your lips with your favorite red lip liner. Then, apply a small amount of lip balm to act as a base and avoid flaking. Apply the liquid lipstick by either applying it straight from the wand, or for extra precision, use a lip brush to fill in your lip. Let it dry and you’re ready to take on the world with your lipstick intact!

Where to buy: $6; Colourpop
