Central State President Recognized for Leadership in Southwest Ohio

WILBERFORCE, OH. — Central State University President Dr. Cynthia Jackson-Hammond has been recognized by two Southwest Ohio organizations for her outstanding leadership within the region.

The Dayton Business Journal named her one of the 50 most influential women in the Dayton, OH-regional market. As one of its BizWomen Power 50, President Jackson-Hammond is among a talented group of business owners, CEOs and elected officials who are moving the region forward, according to the news organization.

The Girl Scouts of Western Ohio named President Jackson-Hammond a 2016 Woman of Distinction in the Leadership Category. The Women of Distinction Award honors inspirational and passionate role models for young women who open doors and create opportunities.

President Jackson-Hammond is one of five Women of Distinction honorees. The other categories include women leaders in the areas of Community Responsibility, Financial Empowerment and Healthy Living.

President Jackson-Hammond became the eighth president of Central State University on July 1, 2012, and the first female president in the 129-year history of the University. Under her leadership, the University developed and is guided by Six Compelling Priorities: provide a quality academic/collegiate experience for all students; target diverse student enrollment; improve retention rates; reduce time to degree completion; development of graduates with the knowledge, skills and dispositions for advanced studies and professional careers; and efficient and effective institutional operations.

Among the University’s accomplishments under President Jackson- Hammond’s leadership:

· Implementing a new surcharge for CSU’s new out-of-state incoming and continuing students that is reduced by more than 70 percent and has made Central State one of the top five most affordable four-year institutions in the nation for out-of-state students.

· Securing $2M in funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service to support the development of a well-qualified and diverse pool of students interested in agriculture/engineering.

· Development of new degree programs, extension services and the new Department of Agricultural Sciences to advance the University’s land-grant mission.

· Opening a new $33M University Student Center, which houses a 500- plus seat dining hall, ballrooms, computer labs, administrative offices and more.
