Savannah River Remediation (SRR) Donates $5,000 to Claflin’s Scholarship Fund in Memory of Students in Fatal Car Accident

Four victims were classmates in sports management program

Claflin University announces that Savannah River Remediation (SRR) has donated $5,000 to the University’s scholarship fund in memory of the four students who died in a car accident on October 13 on Interstate 77 in Columbia.

The donation will help fund scholarships for students majoring in sport management at Claflin. The four students: Jamarius Bruce, Darrell Pendergrass Jr., Keeron McElveen, and Melvin Jackson Jr. were sport management majors.

A fifth student injured in the accident, Gernardo Cato, was recently released from a Columbia hospital.

Tom Foster, SRR President and Project Manager, presented the donation to Claflin President Henry N. Tisdale.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the students’ families and with the Claflin University family as they continue to grieve the loss of these four young men,” Foster said. “It is our hope that the donation will help future students in their memory.”

Since 2012, Savannah River Remediation (SRR), located in Aiken, S.C., has been a partner with Claflin University and provided more than $27,000 for student scholarships.

Dr. Tisdale expressed his gratitude for SRR’s donation and for the agency’s continued support of Claflin University. SRR and Claflin renewed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that prepares students for careers in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). Included are internships, scholarships, career fairs and cooperative education opportunities.

“We are thankful for the relationship we have with Savannah River Remediation and their commitment to helping Claflin University develop visionary leaders,” said Tisdale.

SRR is the liquid waste contractor at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Savannah River Site. SRR is composed of a team of companies led by AECOM with partners Bechtel National, CH2M and BWX Technologies. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Atkins, and AECOM Technical Services.
