Norman Whitfield, along with Barry Gordy and other behind-the-scenes men and women, created the Motown sound and shaped the future of popular music. Born on May 12, 1940 in Harlem, New York, Whitfield served as a songwriter and producer at Motown in the 1960’s and wrote / co-wrote hits like “Ain’t to Proud to Beg,” “I Heard it Through the Grapevine,” and “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me).” Thank you for making us dance, Norman. Happy Birthday!
