Peabody latest in a series of awards for VICE News Tonight on HBO including an Emmy, Polk, Scripps Howard, Gracie and Sidney Hillman award

Today VICE News Tonight on HBO was honored with a Peabody Award for its groundbreaking episode, Charlottesville: Race & Terror. Since 1941, winners of the Peabody Awards have represented the best in media reflecting an excellence in quality reporting and storytelling.

The episode, produced in VICE News Tonight’s first year on the air, is an unflinching look at one of the most consequential weekends in recent American history. VICE News Tonight on HBO gained access to the white nationalist protests at Emancipation Park and followed the group through the senseless act of terror in downtown Charlottesville and back to rally organizer Christopher Cantwell’s hideaway outside of Virginia.

Since its initial HBO airing in August 2017, the episode has accumulated over 50 million video views across all platforms and remains key to understanding the actions and motivations of the Alt-Right. The episode has since been awarded with a Polk, Scripps Howard, Gracie and Sidney Hillman Award.

On the win, Josh Tyrangiel, Executive Vice President, VICE News said: “We’re incredibly proud to be named a Peabody winner in our first year on the air. It’s a great achievement, and an inspiration to continue doing impactful work.”

Madeleine Haeringer, Executive Producer, VICE News Tonight on HBO said: “It’s incredibly exciting to be recognized with a Peabody Award. When the VICE News Tonight team travelled to Charlottesville last August expecting to cover a small rally of white nationalist groups they’d been tracking online, they had no idea that it would turn into one of the most significant weekends in recent American history. Thank you to our incredible teams in the field and back in Brooklyn who worked tirelessly to craft the terror of that weekend into a haunting and unforgettable report.”

VICE News Tonight is the half-hour nightly newscast from VICE Media and HBO. Since its inception in October 2016, VICE News Tonight has re-imagined the nightly news, abandoning the anchor and news desk format for a modern approach to news and current affairs with compelling rare-access, on-the-ground reportage coupled with an innovative and diverse approach to storytelling.

With an Emmy win in only its first year on-air for its in-depth coverage of the fight to push back ISIS in Mosul, VICE News Tonight on HBO has provided audiences with a series of hard-hitting, original reports across a breadth of global and domestic issues, from the chaos and rebirth of societies across the Middle East, to the ever-shifting geopolitical landscape under President Trump and the major debates dividing the nation from gun laws, immigration, education, civil rights and the environment.

The Peabody award-winning team includes:

Elle Reeve, Josh Davis, Tracy Jarrett, Patricia Guerra, Joe LoCascio, Zach Caldwell, Orlando de Guzman, Shawna Thomas, Rita Chan, Tim Clancy, John Chimples, Denny Thomas, Cameron Dennis. VICE News Tonight is executive produced by Shane Smith, Josh Tyrangiel and Madeleine Haeringer.
