That Random Website

These are the test results prior to the experiment I conducted last Thursday.

The test subjects were categorized based on their age and maturity — a child, teenager and an adult. These people are computer literates. However, the test subjects have one thing in common. They do not spend a lot of time in browsing through different websites.

  1. A child — Nathaniel A. Valencia

Nathaniel A. Valencia is my cousin. He is eleven years old and still in elementary. He enjoys playing online games — mainly League of Legends.

The Experiment

The test subject chose http://www.hughjassburgers.com. I think he chose this website because it’s the only one he understands — particularly the word “burgers”.

He laughed when he saw the website’s main page. The page displays a donkey cartoon that show its behind — which I think made him giggle. Upon entering the website, a pop up window appeared. He close the pop up window thinking that it was an ad of some sort. He re-enters the website. After that, the pop up window appeared again. Apparently, the pop up window was the site’s interactive web page that directs the user to its sub pages— home, contact, location and facebook. Looking at the test subject, his facial expression was just normal. In just seconds, he accessed the site’s pages without asking me on how to navigate the website. At the end of the session, he quickly stands and says to me that “Ayos man baga kuya. Mas magayon kuta kung maraming cartoon character kagaya nung kabayo”. I quickly ask if he understand what the web page is all about. He then responded, “Inda kuya. Kala ko tungkol sa cartoons”.

I therefore conclude that he did not understand what was it all about. He just browse the web pages. He did not read a thing. He just followed my instructions — which is to visit a website. If the website was all about kids sutff like toys and games, he would be excited in checking out the website. The user interface design was very simple. The animations were simple but classy. Considering my cousin’s point on view on the experiment, he would have been interested if it has more astig layouts — you know what i mean.

2. Teenager — Joemel John A. Diente

Joemel John A. Diente is my brother. He is 20 years old. He is taking up Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communication Engineering in University of Nueva Caceres. He works as part-time in a computer shop near UNC. He is into computer stuff — softwares and hardwares.

The Experiment

The following test subject chose http://highnoonholsters.com. Upon entering the website. He quickly uttered, “Lapaon baga ang graphics”. Then, he browse the web pages as I instructed to. He quickly navigated to each link. As I look at him, he was at his typical bored face — you know what I mean. Actually, he was in a middle of a game when I ask him to. After he completely visited all the links on the website, he quickly press alt tab to continue his game. Luckily, I was very persistent to gather information about his point of view regarding the website.

I ask if how was the website in terms of its user interface design. He answered, “Hindi ko trip ang kulay saka ang baduy ng design”. I also asked if he understand what the web page is all about. He responded, “Tungkol ata sa baril saka sa lalagyanan ata yun”. In terms of navigating the website, he said “Ayos lang. ”

I therefore conclude that he did understand was the website was all about. The user interface design also plays a big part in the website. Apparently, end users are more interested and excited to check out a website if it has cool design layouts.

3. Adult — Apollo B. Alvarez

Apollo B. Alvarez is my uncle. He is currently at his one month vacation from his overseas job. He is a seaman. He enjoys surfing the web — particulary social networking sites such as facebook.

The Experiment

As I ran out of test subjects, I searched for possible test subjects in our compound. Luckily, my uncle was present at that time. He was at his visit to my grandmother whom he didn't saw in about a year. As I hold my netbook, I quickly ask him to pick a random website and browse through it.

He chose http://sundaymorning.ekwc.nl/#. Upon entering the website, he didn't have any clue of what to do. When I look at the website, there was something going on. The text were floating and it looked to me that it was some weird ad of some sort. Upon looking at his face, he was in a state of frustration. He even asked me if where does he click. He just started clicking on random text. Luckily, those text send him to its main page. He clicked on some links but he did not cover the whole website. I think he was in a hurry to finish the task. Also, I think that he does not have a clue of what was going on to the website. Just to add, I think he did not fully understand what the site was all about. I didn't have the chance to ask him about his feedback.

The test subject experienced a hard time in depicting the website. The main page was all weird for him. He did not have any clue of what to do. In terms of user interface design, it was very complicated to familiarize and understand.
