Our innovation journey: The Medical Grand Challenge (MGC) is a year-long student‐led medical innovation programme at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS Medicine) in Singapore. The challenge commenced in August 2016 with the participating students networking and interacting with the engineering and business faculties to exchange ideas towards solving specific health challenges. This led to the formation of interdisciplinary teams around a chosen project.

We organised regular bootcamp sessions for the teams to equip them with the latest in the field of medical innovation and help build an understanding of the various engineering and business aspects involved. Seminars with guest speakers and mentoring sessions with scientists, clinicians, entrepreneurs, investors and engineers have helped boost the required technical knowledge for the participating teams.

In September 2016, all teams submitted their proposals, following which 25 groups were selected and provided with a seed grant. The shortlisted teams will now submit their final pitches at the MGC finale to be held in August 2017 explaining the working of their product and the business plan. A panel of judges will score projects on business strategy and feasibility, novelty and the potential impact on healthcare. The winning team will be awarded a cash prize of $20,000.

Our HealthCode journey: The MGC is open to partnership and sponsorship opportunities. We invite the community members to join our mission of culturing a spirit of creativity and entrepreneurship among medical students. We hope to build a generation of healthcare professionals who not only seek to serve, but seek to improve.
