Introducing the FrigiStick

What are you working on this summer?

The FrigiStick’s story begins with a bag of ice, or more precisely, a grudge against it. We’ve all heard the phrase before, “put some ice on it!”. By far the most common sports injuries affecting millions of Americans are ordinary strains and sprains: shin splints, hamstring tears, plantar fasciitis, and so on. Ice is often the go-to treatment for these injuries, reducing pain and inflammation.

There’s just one problem: ice melts (duh)! This means that it isn’t portable, and you’re left with a dripping mess to clean. Similarly, you won’t be able to massage your injuries very well, and your futile efforts doing so will likely leave you with cold, numb hands.

Thus, I developed the FrigiStick as a cold therapy alternative. The FrigiStick is a sports medicine device designed to help people treat their athletic injuries: its stainless steel coolant ball allows for over 6 hours of ice cold temperature, and the versatile plastic contraption lets you use the ball to deeply massage any part of your body.

This makes the FrigiStick efficient, portable, and convenient to use.

About Leon Chen

“Leon Chen is a rising sophomore studying Computer Science and Economics. In high school, Leon ran on the track and field team for all four years, competing in the state and national level; much of the inspiration for the FrigiStick originates from this time period. On the other hand, on campus, Leon is the captain of the Harvard Shooting Team and an analyst for Harvard CBE. This summer, Leon will also working as an intern for Ford Motor Company.”

What are your goals for this project this summer?

My goals for this summer involve several vital steps for the growth of the FrigiStick:

  1. Manufacturing. Finding reliable suppliers is important for scaling the manufacturing process as well as keeping the FrigiStick a high quality product at a low price. In the near future, the FrigiStick will exit the prototype phase, and become a real product for consumers to enjoy! Can’t wait to be your new best friend after gyms start reopening!
  2. Marketing. When the first units of the product are available, many will be given out to influencers and athletes to promote the FrigiStick brand. With the help of an online and social media presence, the FrigiStick will make its first sales, and even make appearances at different sporting events.
  3. Partnership. While the FrigiStick makes a great product for individual consumers, it also can make a great tool for athletic organizations. We hope to work with different physical therapists, schools, sports trainers, and more.

We are hoping to further innovation in sports medicine. By creating a simple, cheap, but useful product, we are able to provide everyone with a better way to treat their injuries and define a whole new level of efficiency when it comes to athletics. We are hopeful that we can change the way the people ice by not using ice at all.

I am extremely excited to be working with members of the Builders Incubation Program, and I am eager to learn more about what they have to offer for tech, entrepreneurship, and startup culture. Let’s get this bread :)
