A new way to give back online. Charitable giving personalized and social. Created by seven Harvard students.

What are we working on this summer?

Here at rem, we’re working on building a full ecosystem for charitable giving online. Our current app that’s in beta allows users to discover new charities through a personalized recommendation feed, learn more about those recommended charities, and donate all on one platform. What’s even more exciting about rem is the vertical social network we are building on the app, working to create a collective community of givers and doers. By the end of the summer, the social features on the app will allow users to share charities with friends, create group fundraisers, and challenge their friend circles to match donations. Watch the demo video of our MVP app below!

Here’s a few more screenshots of the app.

Our Team

7 Harvard undergrads + Teddy Hur = Incredible Success.

Left (in order): the Dev Boys Eric Sun, Michael Wu, Nikhil Behari, and Eric Hansen. Right: Tahmid Ahmed looking both quirky and handsome at a party.
Left: Laura Tsai in Greece! Right: Leonard Tang and his incredibly fashionable boots.

Nikhil Behari

Nikhil is a rising junior studying computer science and statistics. He has experience with app development, machine learning, and computer vision through research in accessibility and personal security. Link to more about him can be found at: nikhilbehari.com

Eric Sun

Eric is also a rising junior studying computer science and economics at the college. He’s been involved with startups for a few years now, interning with Buildzoom during their Series A funding and Augment CXM during their seed funding. During these experiences, he’s been able to involve himself in the many facets of early-stage startups, from engineering to product management and marketing.

Eric Hansen

Eric is a rising junior studying computer science. He’s particularly interested in systems design and machine learning research and, through personal projects, has explored web and app development in years past. Outside of academics, he works on The Crimson’s Tech and Business Boards and competes for the Harvard Sailing Team.

Leonard Tang

Leonard is a rising sophomore studying mathematics and economics at the college. He brings a valued suite of experiences in business strategy working as an analyst for Harvard’s premier consulting club HCCG and as a machine learning researcher at the Kreiman Lab. Leonard looks forward to synthesizing his technical and non-technical backgrounds to bring value to the rem content and business teams!

Laura Tsai

Laura is a rising junior at Harvard College studying History and Science with a secondary in Astrophysics. She is interested in the intersection of public health, education, and technology, with an academic focus on refugees in Central America. For rem, her work focuses on the creation of charity content and writing the narratives, with a special focus on black lives matter charities and nonprofits that help fight the current pandemic.

Tahmid Ahmed

Tahmid Ahmed is a rising junior in Adams House with an interest in government and data science. He spent the last summer working at the Bangladesh division of Caritas, an international NGO, gaining on-the-ground experience with NGOs and their impact. Outside of academics, you can catch Tahmid playing basketball, playing fantasy sports, and traveling.

Michael Wu

Michael is a rising junior studying Computer Science at the college who spends his time building cool and useful products designed to help others. He’s been leading rem for almost a full year now as one of the original founders and is excited to work with such a talented team of creators and builders this summer, with whom he has the privilege to call friends and partners. Outside of rem, he spends his time playing basketball where he will be leading Eliot House IMs as one of the co-chairs next year and investing in his favorite companies like Tesla and Square.

Summer Goals:

  1. Build out the social feature. By the end of the summer, we will have the core social features of the app fully functional, meaning the ability to add friends, join groups, post about causes, challenge friends to match donations, and see friend activity in a notifications feed.
  2. Grow the amount of charity content on the app to 75 charities. Additionally, publish the longer form narratives to our blog.
  3. Build connections with at least 5 local Harvard charities so that we gear towards launching officially on campus in late August.
  4. Grow our Instagram page to 5,000 followers. Focus the page on human-centered stories and the lives / communities impacted by effective charity work. Follow us @rem.fyc!
  5. Official launch in late August!

If you’re interested in hearing more about us and the mission or joining the app as a beta tester, please leave a comment below or reach out to me at mdwu@college.harvard.edu and I’d love to talk to you more. Until we meet again, stay foolish and stay hungry!
