5 Ways To Get You In The Holiday Spirit

Getting ready for the holidays usually means shopping, spending a lot ton of money we may not exactly have, and freaking out over what everyone in my family should get. Don’t get me wrong-I LOVE giving people gifts more than receiving them (weird, I know), but rushing around on Christmas Eve last minute because I forgot to get someone a gift card that will probably sit in their wallet for the next year is not exactly high on my priority list.

However, I have realized that there are so many other non-materialistic things that I absolutely love about the holiday season. This season doesn’t always have to be about giving, it can also be about truly enjoying all of the fun this world has to offer. The holidays can also be a tough time of year for people. Whether you’ve lost a loved one you wish could be here, you have to work on Christmas, or you are simply just not feeling in the spirit. However, it’s never too late to find ways to bring some holiday joy into your life!

So, here are a few of my favorite traditions to do in December (or literally the day after Thanksgiving).

  1. Cutting down the most perfect Christmas tree.

Thankfully, my family lives in a small town that has tree farms for miles. So, escaping the city to trek through the woods and find the perfect tree is something I truly enjoy. I may have to drag my family up hills, but we always find that full, tall, ideal tree that will look just right in our family living room.

If you don’t get to go home for the holidays to pick out a tree, go get a fake one and bedazzle it (I might of done this in my apartment already). You need something fun and festive to get you in the holiday spirit- go get that fake tree up!

2. Watching all of the Christmas movies possible

Whether it’s a classic like A Christmas Story, or good old Will Ferrell in tights as Buddy the elf-there is nothing like sitting in front of the fire and watching holiday movies. Grab a bowl of popcorn, some hot coco, and if I were you-I would start with Elf!

3. Baking, A LOT of baking.

Watching our figure is difficult during the holiday season to begin with, but then you have me in the kitchen baking literally every holiday cookie known to man and it’s all over. I’m not sure what it is about those snow man shaped sugar cookies, but I can’t resist baking enough to feed a small village. However, if you want to keep it healthy (which is probably best), browse Pinterest-there are a million holiday recipes that don’t involve ten sticks of butter!

4. Christmas Tree Lighting

There is nothing more festive than a classic tree lighting in your community. The performances, the holiday music, and then BOOM that signature Christmas tree is lit. It may not be as big as the NYC performance, but it is guaranteed to get you in the spirit.

5. Crafting

Instead of wasting money on small gifts that I know I could do myself (like holiday cards), I like to DIY them myself. Not only is it a money saver when, but it’s also a fun way to get you in the holiday spirit. DIY some ornaments, holiday cards, frames for pictures, the list goes on! You’ll still be prepping a gift for the family, but getting your creative juices flowing rather than getting pummeled in Macy’s by the holiday shopping crowd.

There are endless ways to get yourself in the holiday spirit, however, it’s important to find your way and get out there and do it! Don’t let the holiday season be all about emptying your wallet on expensive presents. Go visit friends, family, or help out people in need. Put up the best Christmas lights anyone has seen yet, bake the best snickerdoodle cookies-whatever it is to give you that warm fuzzy holiday feeling!
