Methylene blue: Curing depression and dementia
Effects and applications
Is methylene blue a new miracle cure? Can the blue dye help with depression and possibly prevent dementia? We present methylene blue, its properties and effects as well as possible applications and side effects.
What is methylene blue?
The correct name for methylene blue is methylthionium chloride — a chemical compound with the molecular formula C₁₆H₁₈N₃SCl. It is a deep blue synthetic dye that is used in various fields, including medicine, the textile industry and microbiology.
To get straight to the point: Methylene blue is not a natural substance. It does not occur in nature, in the human body or in food. It is produced synthetically. Methylene blue is therefore not a typical naturopathic remedy, but rather a drug.
It is therefore also used in medicine — in some areas still today, in other areas it has since been replaced by other agents.
Methylene blue from a holistic perspective
Methylene blue undoubtedly has some interesting properties that can promote healing processes. As it also has hardly any side effects in the doses normally used, we believe that it can be used.
