What if everything they ever taught you was a lie? This happened to me. I recall sitting in a doctor’s lounge in the 1980s. It was during my cardiology fellowship training in Houston, Texas. One doctor was shoveling a cream-filled pastry into his mouth during a break. Another doctor looked at him aghast and said, “You know that thing is a homing device for your LAD.”

LAD is the abbreviation for the left anterior descending coronary artery. It is one of the three main heart arteries that supply the heart muscle with blood and oxygen. It is often called the “widow-maker” because complete blockage of it is often fatal. The implication was by eating this, he was going to give himself a heart attack.

Around the same time, my internist-father witnessed my sister’s father-in-law sitting down to breakfast, enjoying freshly cooked bacon and eggs. My father, never one to mince words and with no filter, told him, “Why don’t you get a gun instead and kill yourself?”
