Multiply players in the healthcare industry are working towards meaningful data exchange: the seamless transfer of health data between providers to providers, patients to providers, and providers to patients. To accomplish this, some things must be true of the exchange.

  1. Providers should not have to abandon their existing EHR platform to exchange information with other providers.
  2. When a provider pulls patient information, they should receive data from every data set available about their patient, including from other EHR platforms.
  3. EHR vendors should not search for providers without geographic consideration.
  4. Providers should be able to build and customize their health record exchange platform over their existing EHR.
  5. Providers need to unite under one data exchange module that will allow them to pull health information about their patient from multiple EHR vendors.
  6. All data that is transferred must be secured and encrypted using top-level data encryption technology.
  7. It is better to work with a health record exchange platform that isn’t cemented to an EMR; it allows optimal customization and compatibility.
  8. Patients should be able to access and input information into the same health profile so that all practitioners have access to that data.
  9. Electronic consent from the patient will allow doctors to transfer health information quicker and easier than ever.
  10. EHR vendors should not get in the way of each other as they work towards interoperability.
