The dreadful dark circles (i.e. darkening of skin under your eyes) can affect just any one. It is a problem common among men as well as women. It may occur even in children if their health is not taken care of (due to malnutrition or prolonged illness etc.). They not only make you look tired but also older than your actual age!
Below are some major causes of dark circles and puffiness of eyes.

1. Heredity: Many a times it is in genetics. If your parents/parent have dark circles you may also get the same. If this is the case, it is difficult to get complete rid of it. But yes, you can definitely reduce it to a great extent.

2. Excessive Strain on Eyes: Too much use of smart phone screens and computer over a period of long time can lead to baggy and smoky under eyes.

3. Improper nutrition: If you are not eating a balanced healthy diet, providing your body with various required nutrients it can take a toll on your eyes and the area around it as well.

4. Dehydration or less intake of water. Water helps in keeping our skin moisturized. The skin below your eyes is very sensitive and thin. If it is not sufficiently hydrated with good amount of water intake it start drying up and this leads getting darker in colour.

5. Lack of Sleep: Insomnia or lack of sleep also is a major cause of under eyes puffiness and darkness.

6. Constipation/Hard Stools: If you have constipation or have a problem of hard stools, it affects your eyes indirectly. When you apply extra pressure to pass stools, the blood vessels under your eyes are strained too. This may lead to breaking of these thin blood vessels, leading to dark coloration below your eyes. This may even lead to permanent damage of blood vessels and hence you need to be more careful.

7. Constant Sickness: If you are sickness is not getting treated and you have been ill for a long period of time, it strains your eyes and the under eye area, thus leading to dark circles around them.

8. Repeated rubbing of eyes: Constantly rubbing of eyes again irritates the delicate skin below your eyes and may also damage the thin blood vessels resulting in dark circles.

9. Aging: As you age, it may lead to dark circles or sunken area below eyes.

How to treat or reduce dark circles through home remedies?

1. Cucumber Slices: Cucumbers are natural coolant and also contain antioxidant. Cucumber slices preferably cold, may help reduce the strain on eyes and gives a soothing feeling. Place thin cucumber slices on top of your closed eyes covering the under eye area as well and leave it for 5 minutes. They may help in contract the skin tissue, thus reducing the water retention around the eyes, thus decreasing the bagginess.

2. Used and cold green tea bags: Green tea is rich in antioxidants these help in reducing the aging process. It helps in shrinking of the blood vessels and skin tissue under eyes and this help reduce puffiness of eyes. It may also help skin under eyes look glowing and vivacious. Keep the cold used tea bags on your eyes for 5 -7 minutes.

3. Tomato Slices: Tomatoes contain natural bleaching agents and antioxidants which may reduce the under eye darkness. Place slices of tomatoes over your eyes for 5–10 minutes and check out if you benefit from it.

4. Raw Potatoes: Similarly, raw potatoes are also a source of natural bleaching substances. Crush or grind raw potatoes and place the fresh pulp below your eyes for 10 minutes and wash off.

5. Aloevera Pulp: Aloevera is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties and also is a good moisturizer. Apply the pulp on the eye area for 10 minutes or so and then wash off.

6. Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is a natural moisturizer and also a great healer. Apply 2–3 drops of coconut oil under each of your eyes just before going to sleep and leave it overnight. This will help avoid dryness and will also heal the damaged skin tissue. It will wash away when you have your bath in the morning or wash your face.

7. Rose Water: Dip cotton balls in slightly cold rose water and place them over your eyes for 15 minutes. Rinse your face after that and wipe gently with a clean towel. It is supposed to be a great coolant and rejuvenate skin.

8. Drink sufficient water: Avoid dehydration, rather, keep yourself hydrated all the time to avoid dryness of skin which is a side effect of low water intake.

9. Eat a balanced healthy diet: Eating a diet which contains all the food groups such as whole grains (cereals and pulses, beans, sprouts etc.), plenty of vegetables and fruits, low fat milk and milk products, lean poultry, eggs and lean meat, nuts and oilseeds and healthy fats. Avoid eating junk food and avoid following fad or crash diets which promise fast weight loss but your health goes for a toss and I may various problems such as hair fall, dark circles or sunken or puffy eyes, early aging etc. related to lack of nutrients.

10. Manage your stress better: To manage your stress by engaging into meditation and/or yoga. Doing any kind of physical activity on regular basis help in keeping stress under control. Follow your hobbies such as reading, listening to music etc.
