As we wrap up another amazing nurses week this year, I reflect on the wonderful nurse colleagues in my life and the great contributions they have made to our community.

This year, I had the honour of attending the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) Nursing Awards Gala and heard the beautiful stories of the dedicated and deserving nurses who have tirelessly committed their lives to caring for Albertans, often before themselves and their own families.

The kindness and empathy of nurses have earned them the title of “most trusted profession” in North America for 17 years straight. It’s an exciting time to be a nurse in 2019, with healthcare organizations transforming care into digitally enabled systems, nurses are at the helm of innovation. As a colleague once said, nurses are like ‘dust’, they are EVERYWHERE! Nursing is the largest healthcare profession in the world, and a career in nursing is certainly one of the most diverse and rewarding. Nurses can be found not only at the bedside, but in the community, in corporations, in law, in tech, in education and basically everywhere in between. Nurses play a vital role in building healthy communities and the world needs 9 million more of them if we are to achieve universal health coverage by 2030 (WHO). This is why the World Health Organization has designated 2020 as the ‘Year of the Nurse and Midwife’ — to celebrate the work of nurses, highlight their challenges and amplify their opportunities.

At Healthgig, we are honoured to serve our nursing colleagues and applaud them for the amazing work they do each day to build better, healthier and stronger communities around the world.
