The famous Marcelle Ruth Cancer Centre and Specialist Hospital, on Friday 11th of February 2022, organised a community-based 5km walk to raise awareness about the importance of screening exercises/programs and remove the general stigma about cancer which stops people from accessing care on time.

People gathered far and wide from various organizations to show support including MTN Telecommunications, Oando PLC, Zaron Cosmetics, Leadway Health, AXA Mansard, Interswitch, Pfizer, Bank 3D, HealthStation Limited, First Bank, Zenith Bank, ReadyCash, among other prominent organizations. The march started at exactly 7:30 am at Lagos State Governor’s car park, Marina after a brief workout session anchored by the agile Kate Henshaw.

Everyone was dressed in matching T-shirts, Face caps and flags that were inscribed with the words “Close the Care Gap”, ready to move in sports/gym shoes. The band played while each organization displayed their banners showing support for the awareness walk and marched in unison. The rain poured, but we marched on.

The event which seemed to progress speedily came to an end at 9:30 am, at the endpoint, Marcelle Ruth Centre Victoria Island. A brief workout session was done, followed by a speech given by the CEO & Consultant Haemato-Oncologist, Dr Modupe Elebute-Odunsi. She thanked us and urged us to raise awareness about cancer. A healthy breakfast was shared, pictures were taken, pleasantries were exchanged, and gifts were given to the first 50 women to reach the hospital.

It was indeed a fun, eye-opening and memorable event. Everyday, we will close the care gap in our communities by raising awareness. Cancer cannot conquer the spirit.
