Morning rituals for a mindful start to your day
Every morning, the day in front of you is a blank slate. How you start the morning can set the tone for how you go about your day. While not everyone is a morning person, there are a few ways you can kickstart your day that can leave you feeling energized and ready to be productive. Here are 5 things you can try to start your day on the right foot, and a healthy, mindful note.
Start with a stretch
When you wake up, your joints and muscles might feel a little stiff from being in the same position all night. Get your blood flowing and wake up your muscles with a 5-minute whole body stretch when you roll out of bed. A quick and easy full body stretch increases blood flow to all your muscles as well as your brain, helps relieve feelings of tiredness, and helps to improve your posture.
Combine healthy fats, protein, and whole grains at breakfast
You’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times: breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day. Eating in the morning boosts your low blood sugar, and helps you avoid fatigue, crankiness, and impaired concentration. For the best possible breakfast, try a combination of complex carbs, protein, and healthy fats, which will help level your blood sugar so it doesn’t spike, then crash. Not only does a balanced, nutritious breakfast full of protein, fiber, and heart healthy fats rev your metabolism, it also helps to boost and stabilize your mood. If you aren’t a “breakfast person” and the thought of eating a big meal straight away doesn’t sound appealing, try eating something small and nutritionally dense within 1–2 hours upon waking. A perfect breakfast this superfood smoothie, or whole grain toast with smashed avocado and poached egg.
Write down an intention and goal for the day
Starting your morning by being mindful of the day ahead can get you focused on the positive and prepared for a productive day. Take a minute to think of one thing you want to focus on during the day. This can be a mindset you want to adopt, something specific you want to accomplish, or a person you want to appreciate. Taking a moment to set an intention for your day will motivate and encourage you to not only start your morning with optimism, but also to give your day a purpose in the midst of the busy bustle you have ahead.
Drink a cozy, energizing drink
Starting your morning with a cozy drink has benefits that extend beyond just giving you a caffeine kick. Having a ritual that you look forward to each morning can be a good way to perk up your mood, and get some energy along with added nutritional benefits. Try a matcha latte for an alternative to coffee, which is packed with antioxidants, is both calming and energizing, and also helps to boost your metabolism.
Do something to get your creative juices flowing
Each morning, challenge yourself to do something that teaches you something new or inspires your creativity. This can be listening to music, journaling, meditation, or listening to a podcast on the way to work about something you’ve always wanted to learn more about. Whatever this may be, find something that boosts your energy, and gets you excited to tackle the day ahead with a positive mindset.
Here are just a few of the many different things you can do to get your morning off to a productive, happy, and mindful start. What do you do as a part of your morning ritual? Let us know, we would love to hear from you!
