Candle safety is everyone’s safety

Perhaps like me you’re familiar with, but equally perplexed by, the old saying “if you light a cigarette with a candle, a sailor dies”. Rather dire in my opinion, and I’m not just referring to the smoking of ciggies. Nevertheless, beyond being a superstitious adage, there is merit in it’s promotion of safe candle use.

In its nascent, World Candle Day was started in 2020 by Latin American Candle Manufacturers Association (ALAFAVE) and the European Candle Manufacturers Association (ECMA) to promote safe candle use and encourage people to read the manufacturer’s instructions. Candles bring a beautiful, warm glow to any occasion but ensuring they’re used safely could be the difference between a divine fest or a hot mess.

Do’s of using candles safely

According to World Candle Day and its partners, the imperatives of safe candle burning include:

  • Never leave burning candles unattended
  • Keep flammable items away from burning flames — curtains, confetti, ballgowns, pesky paper napkins etc.
  • Keep burning candles away from pets and kids
  • Extinguish a candle that gives off soot — dark powdery debris that’s a bit like cigarette ash — a smoking candle in this sense, is not safe, extinguish and discard
  • Only use outdoor candles outdoors, not indoors
  • Use an appropriate number of candles for the size of the room — in this case less is always more
  • If you’re sensitive to any fragrances, check the label of scented candles before buying or burning.
