Hormones are the triggers of many essential biological functions and procedures in a human body. From thinking to running, all of the physical and mental activities are the by-product of hormonal release. Experts argue that hormonal imbalances thus not only impact mental states such as mood swings, they also impact physical health.

Many instances of weight gain and loss are due to hormonal imbalance. In some cases, these imbalances can lead to fatal medical conditions and thus require urgent attention. Most of the time, hormonal imbalances are triggered by poor lifestyle choices in addition to some medical reasons. In this article, we are going to address this very issue by listing down four common triggers of hormonal imbalance.

1. Stress

Stress is one of the main reasons for hormonal imbalances. When the body or mind is in a stressful situation, the brain releases stress hormones known as cortisol. With stressful situations becoming a frequent part of a person’s routine, the amount of cortisol release enhances. As a result, the person feels fatigued and the balance of other hormones is also disturbed. It is thus necessary to see an endocrinologist if you are going through a lot of stress in your daily life.

2. Obesity

Obesity is another common cause of hormonal imbalances. Many endocrinologists believe that obesity causes a lot of hormonal glands to malfunction, but insulin production is specifically impacted. Weight control is thus important if you want to keep your hormones in check.

3. Nutritional Deficiency

Nutritional deficiencies can also trigger a hormonal imbalance. Hormonal release is essentially a chemical reaction which is usually triggered by some nutrients such as minerals and vitamins. Like all other chemical reactions hormonal reactions are also unable to operate if the body is lacking essential nutrients.

4. Medication

Many medications such as antidepressants or steroids can also disturb the hormonal balance in the body. These medications are meant to treat a mental or physical condition and thus enhance the production of certain sort of hormones in the body. Such as antidepressants produce relaxation hormones such as dopamine and endorphins which can counter necessary stress hormones such as cortisol.

If you have started a new medication or have recently gained weight and are experiencing mood swings or other symptoms related to hormonal imbalance you should see an endocrinologist as soon as possible.
