He said it with that familiar kind of offhand charm — light in tone, just the right amount of absurd to pass as wit:

“I can’t imagine these days living without AI… and without you.”

I smiled. Maybe even laughed. It was delivered like a compliment — playful, endearing, strange. But something in it caught. Not sharply. More like a small stone in a shoe…easy to ignore, but impossible to forget once noticed.

There was a certain truth to it, embedded in the absurdity. And not necessarily the flattering kind.

Because what he was really saying — whether he realized it or not — was that I belonged in a new category now. One shared with something smart and dependable, something that would respond when prompted, ask little, and provide enough warmth to feel like company.

And maybe the most unsettling part wasn’t that he said it. It was how easily I understood what he meant.
