A 38-year-old male friend recently complained to me about how hard it is to find quality women. And he has the battle scars to back up that complaint.

One of his recent dates wore an ankle bracelet. And not the cute kind. The criminal offender’s type of ankle bracelet.

My friend is a good catch. Or what the kids would call a “high-quality man.” He owns his own home and commands a hefty enough salary to make a significant other’s life comfortable.

But he has one problem. He isn’t looking for another pretty creature to add to his glass menagerie. He wants an intelligent, career-driven, empathic, nurturing, honest woman. Sure, he would like her to be young and attractive, but those can’t be her only redeeming qualities.

Unfortunately, that dream woman doesn’t give a swipe right how much money a man has in the bank. To win that woman, substance matters more than style.

Welcome to the new age of modern dating, where all that glitters is now old. Now, money impresses only those with the Jay Gatsby stink of desperate venality.
