Anxiety can take control of the mind. With mine, I would be fine one minute, and the next I would start spiraling. I could feel my chest tightening up. I had racing thoughts. And I’d get worked up over every “what if” I could think of.

I tried the therapy. I do journaling. I also do deep breathing, and I meditate. These are all fine and good. But I was looking for something to give me instant calm when panic started creeping in.

Grounding

Once, a therapist introduced a grounding move that was quite a joke because it appeared too uncomplicated to be effective.

But the first night I was restless with a racing heart, I tried it. And, wow. I was impressed. It calmed me down fast.

Here’s what to do

  1. Name five things that are within your sight.
  2. Name four things that you can feel with your hands.
  3. Name three things that you can listen to.
  4. Name two things that you can smell.
  5. Name one thing that you can taste.
