A Hundred Lessons: Change Your Life & Choose Kindness
Lesson 94 — Because you always have a choice.
I was driving in the middle lane and the left one was ending soon. The gold van on my left was going the same speed as me — neck and neck. I assumed they’d slow down and get behind me since their lane was about to be kaput, not mine.
But no, they didn’t change their speed.
Their lane was narrowing and they weren’t making any moves. I watched in disbelief, asking myself if this person was really going to make me adjust when merging was his responsibility.
And then I couldn’t wait anymore. I caved and adjusted, pressing on my brakes and letting him over.
Looking for a reaction.
As I let him pass, I scanned his face for an apology, anger, blame, confusion — something! But I got nothing. He was unscathed! Stoic, even.
Then, I zoomed out and noticed my reaction. I was the one who was phased and angry.
Yet, once I saw his non-reaction, my storyline dropped. There was nothing to feed the anger. And I wondered what the point was of getting myself all worked up.
