Stop Expecting You’ll Have Your Life Together By Age Thirty — You Won’t

At least not completely. Here’s why.

Since I was a little girl, I saw adults and thought, “Wow! They know what they’re doing.” Based on this very narrow perspective, I always assumed that I’d have my shit together by my thirties.

But as anyone who’s reached their thirties knows — it’s not what we expected.

Having it together.

Let me point out the obvious here. Thirty isn’t very old. Or rather, it’s not much older than twenty. Best-case scenario, it’s your twenties with more wisdom and self-understanding.

But at any age, life never stops being life. The very phrase “having it together” implies a sense of completion. When you’re alive, there will never be a time when things feel finished, at least not fully.

Having your life together is a vague accomplishment. You can call it success but success is relative.

What does success mean to you?

This is a question that I’ve been considering lately. All along I’ve been told what success was, but it is only now that I’m defining it for myself.
