Integrity Defined
There were two definitions of integrity offered by Oxford Languages as a result of a Google search.
- the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.
and - the state of being whole and undivided.
While both of them have their place I’m going to focus on the second.
When I think of integrity I think of wholeness. I think my whole self is integrated into this life I live. Let me explain.
The idea of being honest and having strong moral principles is certainly a worthy goal. If you Google quotations about integrity you will find, prominently displayed, the following:
Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody’s going to know whether you did it or not. Oprah Winfrey
I’m definitely not going to question Oprah here and yet I believe there is so much more to integrity than doing the right thing. And who’s to say what the right thing is for you or me?
I get the point that there is trustworthiness involved in integrity. But if the only thing on which I focus is trust (not that trust is a small thing mind you) I miss a whole plethora of qualities (see chart above) that are also incredible…
