These Rains We Need And Need Them Not
An eight-syllable lined quatrain questioning all the rains we’ve been having
These rains, we need and need them not —
For the rose, the corn, for the soil
But what of the hungry spider
That camps out, web weaves, then gargoyles
Isn’t her life worth something more too?
These rains, we need and need them not
— Or the worm that braved the weather
To cocoon inside the rose knot
Won’t the rain its life’s joy subdue
Bringing woe, hard to subjugate?
These rains, we need and need them not
For their thought of life is not death
But death’s what they face after all
Who’s to shield them — answer me that.
Darn the rain, their lives destroyeth
These rains, we need and need them not!
