When coming to India, tourists have a wide range of options to consider exploring. The enormous country stretches from the Himalayas in the north to the southernmost tip of peninsula India, surrounded by the mighty oceans! From the majestic, western state of Rajasthan, with its Palaces, historic forts, and golden desert, to the `City of Joy’ Kolkata and amazing mangrove forests of the Sunderbans in the east.

Then there is the ultimate cherry on top, the verdant region in India’s southwest, that is aptly called `God’s Own Country’ — Kerala. This travel article is about Cochin or Kochi in Kerala.

Situated on the Malabar coast on the shores of the Arabian Sea, Cochin is also known as Kochi. Due to its proximity to the sea, Kochi was an important port town centuries ago, allowing European traders to dock at the harbor. Therefore, the influence of European culture is evident here and in the cluster of surrounding islands. A multicultural place where you’ll find Jewish synagogues standing side by side with beautiful churches, temples, and mosques.

The coastline endowed with glorious sunsets, dotted with country boats, slow moving cargo ships, and the magical aroma of spices at the Jewish heart of Mattancherry is what attracts tourists.

Kochi is divided into 3 distinct pockets — Kochi Island, Fort Kochi, and Mattancherry. Each offers a unique experience:

On Kochi Island

  1. Willingdon

Willingdon is an artificial island that is an architectural marvel, having top luxury hotels, that reward you with splendid seafront views. Willingdon Island is also an important naval base. A pleasant boat ride on the water is an enjoyable experience!

2. Bolgatty Island

Previously a Dutch palace, Bolgatty Island is home to the historic hotel Bolgatty Palace. Typical fishing communities can be seen behind it. The backwaters and the sea are accessible from this island.

3. Mattancherry

The Portuguese constructed Mattancherry Palace, which was given as a gift to the Kochi ruler in 1555. A visit to Mattancherry Palace is a must for history buffs. comprising a one-of-a-kind exhibition of priceless paintings, maps, and weaponry. Because of later extensions made by the Dutch, it is also known as the Dutch Palace.

Jewish Synagogue: situated in the Jewish settlement, it was constructed in 1568. It has gold crowns, Belgian chandeliers, and Scrolls of the Law, among other important historical artifacts. It is impossible to visit Kochi and miss the synagogue. It’s worth a visit because it’s a unique experience.

Discovering A Multicultural Marvel in Fort Kochi

The coastline of Fort Kochi has some interesting features, like the rows of Chinese fishing nets, that particularly look marvelous at sunset. This area is fascinating for tourists owing to its Anglo-Indian and Portuguese characteristics and influences.

Here is a list of other things to do :

  • Santa Cruz Basilica is a famous 14th-century Roman Catholic church. Its ornate interiors are adorned with beautiful frescos and are worth a trip.
  • Another well-known church close by is St. Francis Church, built by the Portuguese.
  • Ernakulam — 10 miles away from Kochi is Ernakulam. Connected not just by a bridge, but there are ferry services available too. And that’s a more picturesque route !!
  • Marine Drive is a popular walkaway on the edge of the backwaters, flanked by the Vembanad lake; it’s a pleasant spot to spend time in.

KERALA CUISINE

The highlight of a trip to Kochi is the mouth-watering Kerala cuisine. From an assortment of fish preparations to the flavorful local specialty `appam and stew’! I tasted all of these, and it was awesome.

Thank you folks for your time!
