The porch had to go. Years of rain had taken its toll. There was a hole in the center of it with new ones threatening to form. It wouldn't make another rainy season, that was obvious.

And so, one day, it was removed, well, most of it. A small section protected under the eaves of the house remains. The rest was hauled off. Its removal reopened a walkway that the porch had hidden.

Making it much easier to walk to the driveway and get to my car. I rearranged my plants in their new space, appreciating how easy it will be to water them now, all in a row.

I moved a bench that had been a place for the plants to sit, but now, they had better places to go. Putting the bench next to two large rocks under the cherry blossom tree, I thought how nice it would be to add a water feature.

A couple of days later, I found some affordable bamboo and a little motor, run by solar power. Using an old plant pot, I created a little zen-style fountain. A place to reflect, to be at one with nature.

Buddhism teaches us the importance of stillness, of peace, and of letting go of the busy mind to allow for that peace to anchor in.

Is there some space in your garden, balcony, or home that you could add some zen to?
