Queen of The Hills — Ooty

This was my third trip to this gorgeous hilly getaway, situated in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. I have to admit that I have sort of a `love-hate’ relationship with it. `Hate’ because of its distance from my place…. it takes 7 to 8 hours to reach this paradise from Bangalore. Out of which, 3 to 4 hours is through winding mountain roads, crossing hairpin bends, which I detest.

And if, God forbid, there are any traffic jams, road blockages or diversions, then you’re gone for a toss. For someone who abhors such a treacherous journey, and is susceptible to motion sickness, this is quite an ordeal. But, on the other hand, I can’t even avoid visiting due to its sheer natural beauty and the peace, and relaxation it offers!

On a positive note, this uphill journey is through dense forests. If you are lucky, you’ll be able to spot an occasional elephant drinking water in a pond or a herd of deer crossing the path! Having a camera handy is a great idea when crossing this route, to capture these amazing moments.

Though the original name of Ooty is `Udhagamandalam’, but it’s such a tongue twister, that the majority of the population found it difficult to pronounce. So, to make things easier, it’s also called Ooty. A short and sweet name for one of the most popular travel destinations in the Nilgiris mountain range in South India.

Lake In Ooty

The mist wrapped blue mountains has an artificial lake at its fulcrum, where tourists can enjoy a rejuvenating boat ride whilst savoring lovely sights of the rolling mountains and forests. There is also a quaint lake garden, eateries, pony and toy train rides in the vicinity, giving tiny tots a wonderful time.

Botanical Gardens— Most Touristy Spot

Ooty has the most magnificent Botanical gardens, carpeted in green. The collection of ornamental flowers and plants, of the rarest species are a sight to behold! Don’t miss to check out an impressive Japanese garden also here. You could spend hours in these natural surroundings, and not get bored. You’re sure to encounter a sudden drizzle, which I’ve experienced on every trip. It is a common occurrence in Ooty, be prepared with umbrellas and raincoats and enjoy the pretty sights under the cover of a tree.

This well-laid-out, sprawling park is the venue for the annual flower show held in the summer month of May. If you wish, you can synchronize your trip with the event.

Rose Garden’s Allure

Although named `Rose Gardens’, this park has a wide array of beautiful, flowers, plants, and trees, not just roses. It’s a pleasure to stroll in this scented garden, blossoming with a vast variety of roses in all hues.

The flora and fauna of Ooty is its highlight and can be attributed to its location in the lush, verdant Nilgiris mountain range.

From Tea Plantations To Train Rides & Mountain Peaks

In between the rolling hills of Ooty, there are stretches of grassy lawns and tea and spice plantations that are worth seeing. Hop into the Dodabetta tea factory to find out how tea is made and get a sip of this refreshing brew. Or plan a picnic at Wenlock Downs, a vast expanse (20,000 acres) of undulating landscape. Bollywood fans will be thrilled to be at the film shooting points of several movies and blockbusters.

If you come to Ooty and don’t climb its highest peak, the Dodabetta Mountains, then it’s half the adventure undertaken. Experience unmatched vistas atop this peak, reaching nearly 8600 feet.

Along with happy memories, one product that most tourists, including myself, return with are the various types of authentic aroma oils — eucalyptus, tree tea, lavender, and tons more, that are produced here. These are a specialty of the Nilgiris, which you will not get anywhere else. And I vouch for their top quality. Other famous items are tea, spices and home made chocolates.

If you have the time, a highly elating activity is the train ride that takes passengers around the hills of Ooty. Starting from Udhagamandalam station it covers the distance of 26 kilometers up to Mettupalyam in a leisurely 4 to 5 hours. It was a unique first-time experience for me, as the toy train chugged through bridges, tunnels, and bends — full of nature’s bounties and incredible views!

Eco Tourism All The Way

A trip to a quaint getaway like Ooty replenishes our mind, body, and soul and is a joyful experience. Something we tourists need to be careful about overcrowding, littering, and creating too much noise, which spoil such pristine places.

Sustainable tourism is the need of the hour, and it is essential to practice eco-travel to protect the environment from harm. By being mindful of our impact, and taking steps to minimize it, we can ensure that the natural beauty of such spots is preserved for future generations to enjoy.
