Bounded Leaves

My Roman empire is a shapeless yet shape-shifting creature that sometimes slithers forcefully into my house and sometimes knocks on the door. Every second counts for my Roman empire to decide how it would like to approach me at a given interval, and I suffocate. Has your Roman empire ever pointed a knife millimeters away from your skin, only to retract that knife, just for them to stab you suddenly? Then, the next minute, they’re providing you with the aid you need to stay alive.

Do you know what’s weird though? My Roman empire sometimes becomes other people’s Roman empire. I paint this abstract imagery in my head as to how other people live with their Roman empires, and it makes me want to explode.

If you’ve ever seen a chimera, that’s what my Roman empire looks like. Frankly, on some days, my Roman empire is a cute orange and black cat; their name is “Mingming.” I’m very talkative. I’m aware that other people’s Roman empire appears in very different forms. Some have no permanent ones, while others have a consistent Roman empire.

However, I didn’t mention that all of my Roman empires carry something. Each and every one of my Roman empires carries a book. My Roman empire holds on tightly to that book, whether they’re a fire-breathing dragon or an innocent little ant. It’s the one thing about my Roman empire that I want to bring to this world.

Amidst all the ever-changing forms of the Roman empire, there’s a consistent line I always mutter: “I will publish that book.”

Thank you for reading!

The ‘My/your Roman Empire’ prompt was given by our head editor in a journalism-based publication at the university I’m studying at. This is a feature article I wish to share with everyone else.
