In the dead of night,
shadows creep across the walls,
whispering secrets
that chill the marrow.

Eyes wide open,
heart pounding,
each creak and groan
a symphony of dread.

The mind conjures
phantoms from the abyss,
monsters lurking
just beyond sight.

Breath catches in the throat,
cold sweat beads on the brow,
the room closes in,
a cage of terror.

Every sound magnified,
every thought a blade,
cutting through sanity,
leaving raw fear exposed.

No escape from this waking nightmare,
no refuge from the horrors within,
until the dawn breaks,
and the light dispels the darkness.

The poem “Horrified” describes the intense experience of fear and anxiety during the night. It captures the feeling of being alone in the dark, where every small sound and shadow becomes terrifying. The mind plays tricks, creating imaginary monsters and horrors that feel very real. The physical reactions, such as a racing heart and cold sweat, amplify the sense of dread. The poem conveys the sense of being trapped in this fearful state until the morning light brings relief and dispels the nightmarish fears.
