In an alternate world

“If we had met, it would have been perfect. I think we would not talk about the weather and formal matters; instead, we would have jumped right into discussing the stars at night and how things aligned.

If we had met, it would have been a happy accident. We would be talking in a friendly tone, testing the waters just to be sure. I would have been myself: a bit too open, a bit too loud, a bit too curious for someone who wasn’t going to stay around.

If we had met, it would have been a scene out of a script where two characters who aren’t meant to meet end up making the groundbreaking scene. The conversation would have flowed, and a series of exchanges would have been on the go.

If we had met, it would have been sad. We would have enjoyed those quiet hours in a dreamy world, far from reality, contemplating how our two worlds differ.

If we had met, it would be a tragic match. We would realize the common ground and ties, and how rare it is for two humans to so different yet alike. To meet an explorer, to be a judge, to meet a learner. To meet a person, who is so much in one.

If we had met, it would have cost us both a memory of hope. You can forget the stranger you saw on the street, but you can’t forget the one with whom you create a memory. And who knows how long the memory stays; it can be blurred but not completely erased.

If we had met, it would not have been the best for our future selves. No matter how sweet the present, it goes away in seconds. And if the present doesn’t serve the future, then the present isn’t the best for either one of us to happen.”
