Update: This position has been filled!

This is a full-time role based in Columbus, OH.

Heartland Ventures was founded in 2016. At a time when money continued to flow into major tech ecosystems and startups/VC firms were becoming household names, venture capital was quickly becoming an increasingly crowded space. Despite all this, we noticed a void in the market — the vast majority of tech investments occur on the East and West coasts, yet, most of the significant buyers of technology are located in Middle America (the heartland).

We realized the potential buying power of the heartland, and saw an opportunity to connect creators of industry-changing technologies directly with executives of multi-generational traditional businesses who are actively seeking innovation for their day-to-day business operations.

Today, we are a venture capital firm investing in founders building early-stage technology companies. We partner with Midwestern-based private corporations to identify pressing business issues and connect them with qualified startups that solve those issues.

We believe the Midwest can become a meaningful part of the coastal tech success story.

Why we need an Operations Analyst:

We’re looking to bring on our first Operations Analyst. Our team is strong, but as we continue to scale, we’ve noticed a gap in the operational side of our business. Rather than each of us spending a portion of our time on certain operational tasks and projects, we need a dedicated team member to own this function. This is an opportunity for an amazing individual to help round out our team and challenge us to be better. We see this role as a way to launch one’s career in venture/startups before moving to a deeper operating role, different venture role, or graduate school.

This is a critical role that will allow us to rapidly move forward to our next chapter without breaking what we’ve already built.

Who we’re looking for:

As we’ve learned from the founders we partner with — there is no “cookie-cutter” profile for a strong operator. We also appreciate diversity of experiences and backgrounds, as well as a willingness to try new things, so we are open to various backgrounds. Most importantly we are looking for someone with a passion for our mission and scrappiness to make it happen.

Some attributes that we think could be great are:

  • A person with strong organizational skills who is constantly improving processes and proactively solving problems
  • Experience in or knowledge of modern tech solutions, and willingness to become familiar with company-specific programs and software (CRM)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and being comfortable communicating with interns and CEOs
  • Strong ability to take initiative on a range of tasks

What you’ll do in this role:

We are more focused on finding the right team member as opposed to a rigid set of skills, so the job will craft around the strengths of whomever joins the team. Some parts of the job will include:

  • Support the team through a variety of tasks related to project management, organization, and external/internal communication
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and data, as well as maintaining files, records, and correspondence for meetings
  • Help plan and execute company events, meetings, and special projects
  • Conduct research on market and technology trends and supporting due diligence efforts of early stage technology companies

What you’ll get from this role:

  • Direct exposure to how an early-stage venture fund operates
  • Ability to make a big impact through process improvements and taking initiative on projects
  • Experience in two equally fascinating ecosystems — coastal technology and midwestern businesses
  • Working side by side with a team that values different perspectives over “traditional” experiences

What our process will look like:

Our primary objective is to find the right candidate that best fits our team. We understand that typical interview processes can feel tedious, inauthentic, and like a pressure test. We prefer to use this process to get to know you better, get an understanding of what you care about, learn how you’d approach this role, and share as much as we can about Heartland — where we’ve been, what we’ve learned, and where we’re going. This may look different for each person, but we typically expect:

  • A few phone/video calls with members of our team to learn more about you and share about us
  • Some real-life projects to give a better sense of what the role may look like (these are kept brief and we assume you are busy with many things)
  • In-person day (1–2 days) to get a much deeper feeling for what working together will be like

If this sounds interesting, we’d love to hear from you. Message us at hiring@heartlandvc.com with a subject line of “Operations Analyst.”

We are committed to, and excited for, an inclusive and diverse team. We welcome people of all ages, genders, ethnicities, orientations and backgrounds to apply.
