The day dragged.
As the outside temperature rose, the line of customers got longer and longer, until Jarrett, Madeline and Sage were all busy trying to keep up with them.
Come lunch time, Sage sent first Jarrett and then Madeline off to eat, only leaving herself when the line had dropped to a handful of people.
“Now remember.” She stopped at the door. “Hands to yourselves until closing time.”
“I’ll do my best.” Jarrett’s grin left Madeline feeling bouyed despite the ache in her feet and back.
“Summer lovin’.” The male customer Madeline was serving must’ve heard Sage’s comment. “Where better to find a summer romance than in an icecream van,” he said with a grin. “That’s where I met my wife.” He nodded towards a woman and two children, waiting in the sparse shade of a palm tree. “Well, it was a shop, actually, and sold gelato’s rather than icecream, but close enough.” He winked. “Love of…
