Since Jarrett had bought her textbooks, Madeline didn’t need the extra shift on Thursday. Instead she spent the day at home, making a start on her studies.
By the afternoon her head felt so full of information she thought it might burst, so she went into the kitchen to prepare dinner for herself and her mother.
It felt so good to be standing in the kitchen she’d grown up in, pulling out familiar ingredients to throw together her mother’s favourite risotto. There were so many memories here, snippets of her father, if she thought back far enough, of friends, even a boyfriend or two. There were so, so many with Hope.
Madeline felt a pang at the thought, and pushed it away. She couldn’t undo what she’d done. She wouldn’t, either, even if she could. Hope deserved better than Leo, and Madeline had no doubt she’d find him, sooner rather than later.
