Day 25 Sugano Sensei’s Legacy: Tony Smibert

While remembering Sensei it is important to point toward his legacy and the future. Sensei sent me a letter when I left as Uchideshi. I had written him and he sent me a letter in return.

He thanked me for the letter and said that memory (in this case my memory is his teaching and thanks for it) was good. Memory lights the way forward to another place where one travels. I wish I had kept the letter but it is sadly now long lost.

In remembering we must look forward. Use it to light a way forward. This reading is copied from the book Remembering Sensei. The segment is from Sensei Tony Smibert, Sensei’s most senior and oldest student. He and others will take Sensei’s legacy into the future.

“Do not forget the Spirit of Aikido

without that there is no Aikido.”

Much to think on.

Sincerely,
