Saving A Lot of Money Isn’t Always a Flex
If you’re in your 20s, please find a hobby and have some fun

Too many people flaunt their money on the internet. Everybody knows that.
But what everybody doesn’t know is that too many people flaunt how little they spend, too.
This topic stems from a recent tweet where a man claims to live on merely $18,000 a year.
If you don’t want to do the math, I’ll help you: that’s $1,500 a month.
David, who writes a financial independence newsletter, followed up the tweet with a list of how he spends this ~$1,500 a month.
On its face, a lot of these things add up. It’s certainly possible to get rent/utilities/internet down to $750 if you have a roommate (as he does) and living somewhere relatively cheap. The phone, food, and gas bills can be imagined as well.
What I don’t understand is insurance.
I, a healthy 26-year-old man, pay $230 a month for insurance. I’m sure it’s possible to get it cheaper than that in the right private plan, but in all the research I did, $230 a month felt like a bargain.
This is also assuming he is referring to health insurance. What about car insurance? David says in the original tweet that he doesn’t drive much, which explains the low gas expenditures.
But is he not paying insurance? Even a good driver with cheap insurance should be spending, say, $50 a month.
It doesn’t make a big difference either way and also glosses over my main point: if you’re spending this little each month by choice, you probably live a boring life.
