Nyanja- Kigarama community in Maziba sub-county in Kasese District is a vulnerable community in Uganda.
The community faces the high risk of drought, flood, and mud slides. The community and the school at large need training in disaster management and also how to make water holding channels so that they are more prepared for any eventuality. The disaster management clubs and groups could be formed in the school to keep on expanding the work of disaster management in school, institutions and the community which will be bench marked for future disaster prevention.
The Last Natural Disaster
In May 2022, the community was hit by the heavy flood and mud slides. Floods and mud slides washed away the classroom blocks of Maziba primary school, leaving over 900 primary pupils stranded of where they can continue with their primary education. They also washed community houses.
A family in the community during last natural disaster
Ahimbisibwe Christine is a 40 years old woman and a teacher by profession. She was hopeless and was not certain about the future of the school and her beautiful home that were both washed away by mud slides. Since there wasnāt any organization that had put in place any intervention to prevent current and future disasters in their community and the school at large. She was worried that even the new buildings under construction in the school will also be destroyed. After this mud slide swept away Christineās home, it would take her nearly one whole year to again settle down and start life afresh with her family. She currently needs support.

Money Needed in Case of Natural Disaster
Money to recover from the damage and to prevent the next damage from the disaster is in total around 30,000 USD. The requested money will be used for training which will equip the community and the school with knowledge and skills on disaster management, purchase and distribution of equipment and implementation of making water holding channels that is Fanya-chin and Fanya- juu. The money will also be used to purchase and distribute tree seedlings both fruit trees and non-fruit trees are meant to provide shelter to the school and community, serve as food for school going children at school, act as wind breakers as well as climate modifiers. These interventions will help to reduce the risks of disasters in the school and the community at large.
