The community faces the high risk of flood and drought.

The Last Natural Disaster

From March to April 2022, floods hit the community. The flood destroyed bridges, properties, crops and lives in the community.

A family in the community during last natural disaster

Mr. Muthiba Cristopher is a 43 years old married man who is a farmer and a father of 6 children, 4 girls and 2 boys from Kaghema community. He received the shock of his life when he lost all his crops because of the floods. The damage of the flood has been increasing for recent years, and it destroyed all the homesteads, crops and lives near the river banks. Before the disaster, he used to admire some people who have bigger nursery beds of bamboo trees because they could earn a lot from it by selling some and planting others on the river banks to protect their crops, lives and houses. He was introduced to start his own nursery beds of bamboo trees and organically home made manure to boost his agricultural output.

Mr. Muthiba could earn little from the banana plantation where he could struggle getting school fees for his children. Just as a bread winner of his family who relies on little income from his small portion of land, it was not always easy for him to meet all the domestic cores. After applying the idea of owning nursery beds of bamboo trees, this season, he expects to earn more than 2 million from the nursery bed he currently has. He also intends to plant some on his remaining portion of land near the river banks of River Dubu. He has so far supplied 100 free bamboo for planting to his immediate neighbors so that if it rains heavily in the months to come the rivers shall not flood as it is the case today. This has to be spread to the rest of the community members living along the river banks and in 2 years there will be no severe flooding and improved agricultural output with improved livelihood.

Money Needed in Case of Natural Disaster

Money to recover from the damage and to prevent the next damage from the disaster is in total around 25,000 USD. The requested funds will be used to open up more nursery bed demonstration gardens along the river bank in the community and sensitize members on how to adopt it and its advantages. This funds will also be used to open more organic manure demonstration homes to let other community members learn from the successful community members and multiply this in the entire community. The funds will also be used to sensitize the communities on climate smart agriculture and ensure that there is improved and increase agricultural output which will increase sales and improve community and household income.
