Heel Tough Blog: 2018 Scouting Reports- Muhsin Muhammad III

The Heel Tough Blog’s scouting reports series continued on Friday night, as I traveled to the home of former Tar Heel wide receiver Austin Proehl, Providence High School. The target, however, was 2020 WR Muhsin Muhammad III who was on the opposing sideline as a member of the visiting Myers Park Mustangs. Let’s see how the son of the former Carolina Panthers wide receiver performed on Friday night.
Muhammad had had a great start to his senior season and got off to a solid start in Friday’s game. After a nine yard reception started his night, Muhammad made his catch of the night when he went up to catch a ball that was a bit overthrown by quarterback Drake Maye. Later in the half, Muhammad would catch a screen play that was sniffed out by Providence. With three defenders surrounding him, Muhammad would make a spin move and backtrack to avoid the tackle and then shed another tackler with a lethal stiff arm. Muhammad would also have a solid 15 yard punt return, but the return would be called back due to holding penalty.
The second half would be a quiet one for Muhammad, in part because Myers Park pulled away. He hauled in just one reception for an eight yard gain and fumbled one punt return. His other punt return was a three yard return. Muhammad would play until about the 6:00 mark of the fourth quarter before he was taken off of the field to give the backups some reps with the game getting out of hand.
Overall, it was a solid showing from the 2020 WR on Friday evening. Muhammad show how reliable his hands can be and one of my favorite things about him is his ability to be effective out of both the slot and outside receiver spots. He has the ability to escape would be tacklers with his shiftiness and combining with his size makes him a dangerous receiving threat. Not to mention, he a strong run blocker who is able to hold his blocks for long period of time. Muhammad’s return ability also adds to his intrigue, as even if he is unable to make an impact at receiver early on in his college career, he will be able to get on the field as a special teams member.
The main reason Muhammad didn’t have a bigger night: Virginia Tech commit Elijah Bowick had a massive night. Bowick finished with four receptions for 146 yards and a long touchdown in the first half alone. Sophomore QB Drake Maye, the son of former Tar Heel quarterback Mark and current basketball power forward Luke, threw for 147 yards and two touchdowns while showcasing a strong arm, accurate arm in the first half. Running backs Jatonie Fields, Jacquez Robinson and even transfer Tim Newman had strong nights, led by Robinson’s 13 carries for 126 yards. Defensively for Myers Park, FBS bound defensive backs Trey Bly and Cameron Roseman-Sinclair both had solid games, and 350 lbs. defensive tackle Jordan King made a nice impression.
For Providence, quarterback Mason Broome was solid when he had time to throw and wide receiver Will Kakavitsas had himself a good game, leading the Panthers in receiving.
