As the Heels were getting ready to board a plane for Berkeley, CA, one 2019 target was announcing his commitment. 2019 3✮ OT Asim Richards committed to the Heels via Twitter on Thursday. Richards becomes the Heels’ first commitment in the 2019 class since Raykwon Anderson on July 13rd.

Richards, the No. 103 OT in the 2019 class, hails from Haverford School in Haverford, PA. As a junior last season, Richards played both sides of the football, starting all ten games on the offensive line and leading his team in tackles with 51 as a defensive tackle. Richards had 10.0 tackles for a loss, as well as 4.0 sacks, which led his team, too.

The tape on Richards does not show us much of anything. Most of the film shows Richards on the defensive side of the football, but the snaps that are seen on the offensive side of ball show us a few things. Richards clearly fits the mold of the Heels recruits on the offensive line in the last few seasons, a tall and thick offensive tackle that can move elsewhere along the offensive line when he gets to the college level. Richards’ long arms give him the advantage against most defensive end’s. Most of the clips of Richards on the offensive line are in run blocking situation, where he is extremely effective and overpowers opponent with his wingspan and strength. With limited pass protection on tape, a concern has to be whether or not he is able to protect the quarterback. Richard could be a guy that can play either side of the football if needed. However, Richard has the size that Kapilovic has focused in bringing in over the last few years and he’ll have his chance to develop.

The commitment moves the Heels 2019 class up from 65th nationally to 56th, but the class still remains 13th in the ACC. The commitment is at least a positive for a class that contains just 12 players at the moment. The Heels will need to build off of this commitment and get this class going in the right direction. Wins on the gridiron will help that for sure.
