Heel Tough Blog: Heels Add 2019 JUCO DE
The Heels added to their 2019 class on Tuesday night, this time in the form of a junior college defensive end. 2019 3✮ SDE Ray Vohasek announced his commitment just a little ago via Twitter and just three days after his official visit to Chapel Hill.
Vohasek will come to Chapel Hill from the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL where he finished with 33 total tackles, 12.0 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks this past season as a freshman. Prior to that, Vohasek was a two-year varsity starter on both sides of the football at McHenry High School in McHenry, IL. Vohasek will have three years of eligibility remaining when he arrives in Chapel Hill in the fall.
Vohasek measures in at 6’4 and 265 lbs. and has the ability to play as a 3–4 defensive end, which is where the Heels will need him to play with the scheme expecting to shift to a 3–4. Vohasek gave both guards and tackles issues with his quickness off of the football and speed off the edge, but that was against junior college competition, so the question will be how do FBS tackles handle it? Vohasek does use the bull rush from time to time, but thrives as a pass rusher when goes to the combination of finesse moves, primarily the spin move. Vohasek’s experience will pay dividends and Tar Heels fans should be encouraged by the fact that he had such a sizeable impact in his first year on campus. Tar Heel fans might remember the last JUCO defensive lineman that played at Carolina: Sylvester Williams.
With Vohasek’s commitment, the Heels 2019 class moves from 36th to 34th overall in the class and also moves from 7th up to 6th in the ACC. His commitment also means that the Heels have landed the commitment of two of their major late signing period targets. Expect the focus to remain heavily on the defensive side of the football for the remaining three weeks of the 2019 recruiting class.
